Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few months you'll know that in the upcoming IBM Lotus Traveler 8.5.1 release, support for the Apple iPhone has been added. This is probably one of the most important bits of news in the upcoming release for any admin out there who needs to support this device.

I have been testing the latest beta release of traveler ( code drop 8 ) for a little while and even rolled it out to a number of users in our corporate environment and so far the feedback has been a positive one. The simple fact that the Notes calendar and contacts are now synced to the device is one of the big winners with our corporate users. Most of these users were blackberry users in the past and this is something they really missed.

From the admin point of view installation was a snap. Just stop the domino server, run the setup file, answer a few quick questions and then start the domino server. I would guess that this took me about 10 minutes max on my test server.  Once your domino server is back up and running getting the iPhone running on Traveler is just as easy. Just open the web browser on the iPhone and point it to http://yourservername/servlet/traveler and then login and generate a profile that will download to the iPhone and within a few minutes the users mail, calendar and contacts will start syncing with the device.

If your expecting a big long blog posting on doing the install and configuration then keep looking. It is so simple and just works that there really isn't a need for one. I will, however, in a future posting explain how to customize the profile document sent to the iPhone to add in a few extra security settings.

IBM Lotus Notes/Domino and Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.1 is prerelease software and there are no guarantees from IBM that the functionality presented will be in the final shipping product.

Gravatar Image1 - Wow, is it that simple ? I just have a 'naked' domino server. Is that really all there is to it ? 1 setup file?
No need for Mobile me ? Is it push too ? When does it sync ? I know nothing about traveler. Sorry for the newbie questions.

Gravatar Image2 - I have tested 8.5.1 Traveler on iPhone only through IBM Lotus Greenhouse, and yes, it pushes. I am not sure how it is setup to sync or how you can modify it, especially for the iPhone.

I still wonder if you can merge business contacts/calendars with existing ones on the iPhone - I don't want to loose my private stuff on there when testing it - while testing it with Greenhouse I declined the contacts/calendar...

Gravatar Image3 - @2 iPhone & iPod touch with a v3.0 OS do not delete existing contacts and they do not sync into your personal addressbook.

Gravatar Image4 - Problems: When setting up the profile on an iPhone I get one of two errors "exchange account verification failed" and "an error occurred while contacting the server". I'm using Domino and Traveler 8.5.1.
I'm new to iPhones. Am I doing something wrong?

Gravatar Image5 - Nope, it was not that easy. Traveler installed. Task is running. I've gone through every documented configuration document and file in the information center, I've punched numerous holes in my firewall and confirmed communication through them. Everything I can think of, and it still does not work. Extremely frustrating.

Gravatar Image6 - I have upgrade my Domino server to 8.5.1 and install Lotus Traveler 8.5.1 . The Iphone are not working , I have the same error as Gary . "Exchange account verification failed". I can see the traveler default website and my login/Password is working. I sent a PRM to IBM ... it's simple to install and working for windows Mobile... except Iphone Emoticon

Gravatar Image7 - Ok loads of peops have posted the problem, no one seems to have posted a solution.

I have just upgraded our mail server to 8.5.1 and have the same issue, traveler works with all devices other than the iphone. "an error occurred while contacting the server"

Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Regards

David Lemon

Gravatar Image8 - I have discovered the solution to our problem now.

The domino Directory needs to be running at level 8.5.1
Although i upgraded the Domino server, i chose not to upgrade the Domino Directory at this stage and that is why i have been getting the same errors as Gary.
I upgraded the design, shut down notes, ran ncompact -B -D -C and then restarted Domino and VOILA

All was good once more.

Gravatar Image9 - Hi.

I can not get this to work, We are getting autentication error when trying to "install" from the traveler.

Traveler and DD is 8.5.1

Is there some "special" config that need to be done to make it work?
Maybe "Redirect TCP to SSL" in traveler?

Thanx very much!

Gravatar Image10 - I get Error 0x1728 processing command. The prompt for password was aborted by user when attempting to upload my notes id files, anyone having this problem or know of a solution?

Gravatar Image12 - I had the same problems as mentioned above. Doenload the newest version (which is really 8.5.1. and not 8.5.0.2). Configure your notes ini file manually ({ Link }
Afterwards it was working for me. Great product once it works.

Gravatar Image13 - Tested it with HTC windows mobile 6.1 & 6.5 and iphone. Works OK. But due to corporate use we need device management to enforce password and get vipe out functionality. This is not working at all. Useless for business at this stage.
